Ο Amon Tobin, λοιπόν, ξεκίνησε με τους συνεργάτες του ένα κυνήγι ήχων, με στόχο να φτιάξει μουσική. Ηχογράφησε, επεξεργάστηκε και τελικά δημιούργησε το Foley Room. Ανακάτεψε ήχους "φυσιολογικούς" (κοινά αποδεκτούς ως μουσική ας το πούμε για να συνεννοούμαστε), με ήχους "φυσικούς" σαν αυτούς που αναφέρονται παραπάνω, στο δελτίο τύπου της Ninja Tune. Κάθισε, στο foley room του, στην καμπίνα σχεδιασμού ήχου δηλαδή, και έγινε ο "ενορχηστρωτής" μιας μπάντας, που περιλαμβάνει από τους Kronos Quartet στο Bloodstone, μέχρι τα... κουζινικά στο Kitchen Sink και την τίγρη που βρυχάται στο Big furry head. Το θέμα, όμως, δεν είναι τόσο η πηγή του ήχου όσο αυτό που στο τέλος ακούς. Γιατί, στην πραγματικότητα, δε μας ενδιαφέρει αν ο Amon Tobin ηχογραφεί το πως τραγουδάνε στο μπάνιο οι γείτονές του, αλλά το πως τα παρουσιάζει αυτά. Και εκεί είναι που κερδίζει ο Άμμωνας και κάνει την έκπληξη. Το άλμπουμ ξεχειλίζει από φαντασία και ιδέες, είναι βυθισμένο στη musique concrete, και στέκει επάξια, δίπλα στα καλύτερα των Matmos. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι δεν περίμενα κάτι τέτοιο από τον Amon Tobin, πιστεύοντας ότι είχε εξαντλήσει τις δυνατότητες του στα Permutation και Supermodified, αν και είχε φανερώσει τις προθέσεις του ήδη από το soundtrack του Splinter Cell. Το άλμπουμ, είναι αυτό που λέμε avant-garde electronica, χωρίς όμως να το φωνάζει και πάρα πολύ και χωρίς να αποτελεί ένα τρομερά δύσκολο άκουσμα. Πολλές φορές, μάλιστα είναι ονειρικό, όπως στο Horsefish, η κινηματογραφικό όπως στο At the end of the day, αλλά και το Straight Psyche.

Δεν ξέρω αν στο μέλλον, ο Άμμωνας βγάλει κάτι καλύτερο, μακάρι, πάντως αυτό εδώ το άλμπουμ ξεπερνιέται πολύ δύσκολα, όσο και αν συνεχίσει (και πολύ καλά θα κάνει), να πειραματίζεται και να ψάχνεται, μη λειτουργώντας πλέον ως ένας DJ, και πιθανότατα (μόνο ο χρόνος μπορεί να το δείξει αυτό) το Foley Room να είναι το magnum opus του. Η τουλάχιστον ας πιστεύουμε αυτό, μέχρι την επόμενη έκπληξη...

He mixed normal sounds, such as Kronos Quartet in "Bloodstone" and natural such as a tiger in "Big Furry Head" and other as it is noteiced in the press release of Ninja Tune.But it is not the source of the sound that matters as the final result. And here the point that makes the difference for Amon Tobin.This album is influenced by musique concrete and is a strong encounter for the best Matmos albums. I did not wait such a greta album by Amon Tobin thinking that he have done all that he could in "permutation" and "supermodified". The album is an avantgarde electronica release, but is also quite atmospherical in songs like "horsefish" or "Straight Psyche" and "At the end of the day". I don't know if Amon Tobin can release a better album than this one, this might be very difficult, but it's a good thing for him, to keep experimenting and searching new sources of sounds not as a DJ anymore. We will be waiting for the next surprise.
